What is a body scan?| Live well with blood cancer

So, there are two main ways
that we practise mindfulness. One is just paying attention
in our everyday life and doing activities
in a mindful way. But also, in order to help us
to develop mindfulness and to, in a way, be able
to maintain it more, we often do
some little exercises or even little meditations where we’re not engaged
in our everyday activities and we’re just focusing on trying to cultivate
awareness and mindfulness. So, we’re going to start
with a body scan, which is basically bringing
awareness to the body. We can not be aware of our body, or maybe for reasons we
don’t particularly want to connect with our body. Maybe we’re experiencing
pain or discomfort, maybe we’ve got illness, maybe we’re finding it hard
to cope with the diagnosis, and that’s making us feel
a little disconnected from our bodies. So, it’s really helpful to use the body as
a kind of ground for our awareness, our sort of starting point. And one reason is because also,
our minds can get very active, we can get very anxious, particularly when we’re feeling
stressed or we’re worried about a particular diagnosis, or symptoms, or things
that are happening in our lives.
