Vinod Balasa, MD – Cancer and Blood Disorders Center – Valley Children’s Healthcare

I’m Vinod Balasa, I’m the medical director of
hematology and oncology here at Valley Children’s Hospital and director of the
Hemophilia Treatment Center here as well. I have been at Valley Children’s for three years
and I came here as medical director so I have always wanted to take care of children
and be in pediatrics. During my residency I just got drawn towards hematology and oncology. The word cancer is the one that sends shivers down
anybody’s spine However, the biggest advantage we have as pediatric
oncologists is the ability to cure the majority of our children with cancer and
I think that is what gives us the motivation and the strength to keep
doing what we do. So it is not that we are able to save every child, which is
our goal, but taking care of and helping the majority of children be cured of their
cancer is what gives us the strength to keep doing it. Our biggest strength, I feel, is the
clinical care we are able to provide, which I don’t think is inferior in any way
to any hospital anywhere in the world and so we make it a point
to make sure we are up to par with the current standards of care for any
disorder, especially in cancer and blood diseases and so we provide the
same kind of care that the patient would be able to get anywhere else. I am extremely fortunate to be able to work with a very passionate group of
individuals, both from the physicians and faculty to the nursing staff and a
lot of other specialties in pediatric hematology-oncology. We may be small but
compared to many other institutions we are fairly big-sized hematology-oncology group and the diversity in the specialization that we have and the ability
to provide excellent care in all disorders related to blood and cancer I think
sets us apart and I think the passion with which the nurses and other staff
work very closely with us also helps us deliver better care.
