♪MUSIC♪ ♪MUSIC♪>>MICHAEL MOFFETT, ARTIST, SCULPTOR; COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ART? YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, YOU GOT SURREALISM . YOU GOT REALISM. YOU GOT YOU KNOW, I JUST CALL IT MOFFETT ART. WHEN PEOPLE LOOK AT YOUR ARTWORK, YOU WANT THEM TO GO “THAT’S A MOFFETT.”>>I THINK HE’S GREAT.>>I THINK HE’S VERY TALENTED.>>I WOULD SAY THAT MY WORK IS SOCIAL COMMENTARY. YOU KNOW? I MEAN THAT’S KIND OF WHAT INSPIRES ME. MAKING SOME SORT OF STATEMENT AND PEOPLE THAT COME AND LOOK IN MY WINDOW AND LOOK AT THE PORTABLE WAR MEMORIAL, I MEAN IT’S A VERY POWERFUL PIECE. AND WHERE’S THE POWER COME FROM? IT’S COMING FROM THEM. THEY JUST WANT TO TALK TO ME ABOUT IT. YOU KNOW? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? WHAT WAS GOING ON? BUT I ASK THEM, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU, FIRST OF ALL? AND THEN THEY’LL RELATE TO IT ON WHATEVER TERMS THAT THEY BRING TO THE PIECE.>>IT LOOKS SO REAL. REALLY INTENSE.>>I WOULD NOT BE WHO I AM TODAY WITHOUT MY EXPERIENCE OF BEING IN COMBAT IN VIETNAM. I WAS 23 WHEN I WAS IN THE MARINE CORP IN VIETNAM. AND WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG, YOU THINK YOU’RE IMMORTAL. IT DIDN’T OCCUR TO ME THAT I WOULDN’T SURVIVE IT. THERE’S THIS UNRAVELING OF EMOTION. LIKE EVEN NOW, I THINK ABOUT THE WAR’S GONNA GO ON AND ON. WE’RE NOT GONNA END WAR. ALL YOU CAN DO IS DO THE WORK TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY AND PUT IT OUT THERE. AND THEN, IF SOMEBODY RELATES TO IT. AND I THINK THE PORTABLE WAR MEMORIAL PIECES WERE REALLY STRONG AND IT HAS TO DO WITH PTSD, VETERANS SUICIDE. EACH PERSON THAT COMES TO LOOK AT THOSE PIECES, THEY BRING TO THE PIECE THE ENERGY OF WHOEVER THEY ARE AND WHATEVER THEY’VE DONE IN THEIR LIFE. THEIR CEREBRAL INTERPRETATION OF MY WORK IS IN THEIR HEAD. RIGHT? ALL I’M DOING IS MAKING MY STATEMENT. SOME PEOPLE JUST STARE AND LOOK AT IT. AND I CAN SEE LIKE OLDER GUYS THAT HAVE BEEN IN COMBAT OR WHATEVER, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE WHEELS ARE TURNING. THAT THERE’S SOMETHING THEY’RE RELATING TO. SO A LOT OF MY WORK I JUST DO IN DIFFERENT MEDIUMS. I ENJOY DOING ALL MEDIUMS. I THINK AS A SCULPTOR, IT’S IMPORTANT TO EXPERIMENT WITH AS MANY MATERIALS AS POSSIBLE. HERE’S A FIBERGLASS PIECE I JUST DID. JUST TO SHOW YOU HOW THAT WORKS. THAT’S JUST A RAW FIBERGLASS PIECE. THAT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED UP. IT’LL BE PAINTED. WHATEVER I DECIDE TO DO WITH IT. AND THAT’S GOING WITH THIS PIECE HERE, WHICH WILL BE A FULL. THIS WILL BE CUT DOWN. THIS WILL BE ALL ONE PIECE. AND IT’S GONNA BE A FULL BODY. SO IT’S GONNA BE MALE, FEMALE PARTS AND THEN HE/SHE’S GONNA BE PACKING A 356 MAGNUM. AND IT HAS TO DO WITH THE ANIMALS ARE COMING BACK FOR RETRIBUTION. THE FOUNTAINHEAD SCULPTURE WAS A 200 POUND BRONZE SCULPTURE. THE IMMEDIATE UNVEILING, IT WENT SOUTH REAL QUICK AND PEOPLE CAME UP TO ME AND GO “WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO US?” AND THEN THE GUY THAT COMMISSIONED ME, HE CAME OVER AND SAID, “YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO TAKE IT OUT OF HERE. WE DON’T WANT IT. IT’S NOT APPROPRIATE. IT’S PRETTY SPECTACULAR. SOME PEOPLE SAY, WHY DID YOU GO AND DO THAT FOR? WELL THAT’S THE POINT. ISN’T IT? YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING INTERESTING THAT PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT YOUR WORK AND THEY GO “WOW” FOR WHATEVER WOW THAT IS. THAT TO ME JUST OPENED A WHOLE NEW VENUE OF THAT’S THE ROUTE TO GO. YOU KNOW? BECAUSE THE REACTION IS SO STRONG. THE WORST THING YOU COULD SAY TO AN ARTIST, “HEY, THAT’S NICE.” THAT MEANS YOU DIDN’T HIT THE MARK. YOU WANT YOUR WORK TO HAVE SOUL, SO TO SPEAK. RIGHT? SO IT’S ACTUALLY A LIVING, BREATHING. SO THAT WHEN PEOPLE LOOK AT IT, THEY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT WHAT’S THE MESSAGE? IN OTHER WORDS, YOU JUST CAN’T LIKE MAKE IT CLEAR BECAUSE THEN THEY’LL BE BORED WITH IT. THEY WON’T THINK ABOUT IT. SO LIKE MORE OF A SURREALISTIC DREAM OR NIGHTMARE, WHATEVER THE CASE IS. I THINK THAT CREATES MORE OF A CEREBRAL THOUGHT PROCESS FOR THE PERSON THAT’S LOOKING AT THE WORK. RIGHT? BECAUSE WHEN THEY WALK AWAY, THEY’RE NOT GONNA FORGET ABOUT IT.
