Meet Our Doc: Katie Dorris, MD, Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

During my training, I was always
very drawn to pediatrics. I really liked the opportunity
to get to know the children and their families and care for them
over long periods of time. It’s always important to emphasize
how critical the role of the parent and the child is on the
team, on the care team. We’re
listening and what they’re saying matters and
effects the direction that the care is going. When it’s
important to do things in a way that might be different from
what the family would like to do, that I have a good reason
for it and that I can explain it to them. It’s been a privilege
to get to know these families at some of the points in their
lives that seem to be the most stressful and to celebrate
them when we have good news and support them when things may not
be going according to plan. For these patients to survive better
and have better quality of their lives in the future,
that’s our goal here for sure.
