Looking at the figures, about two million Finns suffer from high blood pressure and about one million of them are on medication, but the bad thing is that even with medication only 40% get back to healthy levels. So I think we should pay more attention to lifestyle choices. I was diagnosed high blood pressure a long time ago It was already back then that I started thinking whether there was something else I could do on top of taking my prescribed medication? And now that the cholesterol levels were found to be high as well ñ and this is something completely new to me, this really makes me think even more on healther lifestyle choices and eating habits, exercising and other things… that may have positive impact on my wellbeing. Many people with high blood pressure know they should monitor their sodium intake, because most of us tend to use too much salt, but there is also potassium that counterbalances sodium and helps to lower blood pressure levels. Also calcium has several benefits, just like the fibres we consume. This all helps to keep blood pressure at normal levels. Many things can raise cholesterol levels: one of the most important thing is the quality of fat we eat, i.e. we should eat less unsaturated fatty acids or hard fat and increase the intake of soft fats ñ partucularly the polyunsaturated fatty acids. Of those polyunsaturated fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid is particularly beneficial. You can get alpha-linolenic acid from walnuts, rapeseed oil and the level of alpha-linolenic acid is partucularly high in flaxseed oil. There are of course other beneficial factors in flaxseed oil like soluble fibres that also reduce cholesterol levels. Or take oat and flaxseed extracts or the legume plants ñ they all produce soluble fibres. Then there are the phytosterols and stanols that can also lower cholesterol levels.
