Harry’s Diabetes and Heart Attack Story

Harry’s Diabetes and Heart Attack Story

– Hi everybody, it’s
Harry from Cincinnati. Glad to be with you this month. Many of you know this, I used to weigh over 300 pounds 15 years ago. And a funny thing happened to me on the way to a meeting two weeks ago. I had a heart attack. Now, granted I don’t weigh that now, I’ve lost my weight and kept it off. But I am a diabetic, and
because I’m a diabetic I’m at higher risk of
having a heart attack. Luckily for me, my association with The American Heart Association
for the last two years, I’m a lot better informed
now, than I ever was. Because before I would probably
ignore the warning signs. The warning signs for
me, what happened was I had really intense chest pains, like really bad indigestion. My blood sugars went low like you do when you have low blood sugars. But something happened
that was very unusual. I was very weak. I had a hard time just putting
my supplies in the car. Of course, I knew then I needed to go to the hospital immediately, and not mess around with it. Now, as a man, my first thought was well, I’ll just drive
myself to the hospital. It’s only five or seven miles away. But I know that’s a stupid thing to do. Then I remembered that I was only one block away from the fire department headquarters her in Cincinnati. So I went to the fire department’s headquarters here in Cincinnati. Told them, hey guys I think I’m having a heart attack. Of course, they put me in an ambulance and immediately took
me up to the hospital. So nobody else’s live was
at risk, not even mine. They ran immediate tests and it showed, at that time, no heart attack yet. But they did the blood test and later on, it did show that I did
have a heart attack. The very next day, Wednesday,
they did the angioplasty. Went up the leg, found out two of my arteries were 90 percent blocked. No damage to the heart. They put a stent in that
day, and a week later, which is a week ago Wednesday, they put the second stent in. You can see I’m looking pretty good for a healthy guy that’s
had a heart attack, just two weeks ago. So my motto is, now, if you’re gonna have a heart attack, be healthy first. And stay close to our website, thanks.
