Cancer Facts : Mouth Cancer Symptoms

Hi. This is Dr. David Cathcart from the Heartland
Regional Medical Center and today we are going to talk about mouth cancers. Mouth cancers
typically can form either inside what’s called the mucosa or inside the cheek or the soft
palate of the mouth or actually on the tongue. These cancers are most typically caused either
by smoking or by chewing tobacco. Now, they can occur for other reasons as well, but those
are probably the most common causes. They are usually a painless lump inside the mouth
or on the tongue that seems to be getting larger. They may bleed. When you go to the
dentist, the dentist is very good about typically screening for mouth cancers. Mouth cancers
are dangerous. They tend to metastasize and can be deadly just as many other types of
cancers are. So, when you go to your doctor, if you have a lump inside your mouth or on
your tongue, please have him check it out or have your dentist do a mouth cancer screening
for you. He’ll know what to look for. In the meantime, to avoid those cancers, don’t chew
tobacco and don’t smoke. This is Dr. David Cathcart talking to you about mouth cancer.
