Can Chocolate Lower High Blood Pressure?

Can Chocolate Lower High Blood Pressure?

– The words chocolate and
healthy in the same sentence sounds a little bit too
good to be true, right? Well, it’s not, but there’s more to it. When it comes to treating
high blood pressure there’s a lot of food and nutrients that we’re told to avoid. At the same time, there’s a lot of foods that can actually help, with good, solid scientific
evidence to back them up. Now, chocolate is actually
one of those foods, but, as with all good things in life, there is a catch. Let’s first quickly look at how chocolate is beneficial to health. Now, chocolate contains cocoa extracted from the cocoa plant. The active ingredients within
cocoa are the flavanols. Now these are thought to
help low blood pressure, through inhibition of
Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme, or ACE for short. Now, ACE makes blood vessels
constrict and get smaller, which raises blood pressure. So by inhibiting ACE, which is
what a lot of medications do, we can lower blood pressure. So that’s the mechanism by
which flavanols may help. Now as flavanols are in cocoa,
the more cocoa, the better. A large analysis of 20 previous studies concluded that consumption of cocoa, usually very dark cocoa,
or cocoa supplementation, is associated with a
small 2-3 point reduction of systolic blood pressure. Now that’s the top and most telling number in a blood pressure reading. An earlier analysis of 13 relevant studies made a similar conclusion, noting that cocoa products
were most effective in those with high blood
pressure or pre-hypertension. If we dig a little deeper, we can see that these benefits are only seen with dark
chocolate or cocoa extract, equivalent to having 500 to
1,000 milligrams of flavanols per day. This is just that for chocolate
to have any real benefits it has to be really rich in cocoa, and, therefore, really dark. So, to be more precise, you’d have to eat roughly 30 grams or one
ounce of 85% dark chocolate each day to have any benefits. Problem is, the more cocoa you add, the less sugar you have. That’s why dark chocolate
is a lot more bitter than milk chocolate. And that’s why milk
chocolate, gram for gram, has more than double the sugar and less than half of the cocoa, which means less than half
of the flavenols, as well. Okay, so to wrap it up, in order for chocolate to
be potentially beneficial for lowering blood pressure, it must be at least 85% cocoa or more. Otherwise, the health benefits are cancelled out by the
additional sugar and calories that you’d be eating. At least we know it’s a treat that doesn’t make things worse.

  1. Cacao is high in oxalates. The pain from passing a oxalate kidney stone has said to be right up there with child birth and gunshot wounds. Oxalates are used by various plants as a defence system to guard against small chewing insects. Oxalates are like micro shards of glass. …….please pass the oxalobacter formigenes !
