10 Iconic Personalities Who Have Battled Mental Illness | Episode 1 | Deepika Padukone

I think what was tough was (ahh..) not
being able to talk to anyone because I don’t think anyone understood
what I was experiencing Deepika Padukone, one of the very
successful and influential personalities in India was at the
peak of her career in 2014, when she started
feeling low, empty and directionless. She experienced
a sick, pittish feeling in her stomach for days on end. On seeking
help from mental health professionals, she was diagnosed with
depression and soon after began treatment. Depression ranges in
seriousness from mild, temporary episodes of sadness to severe persistent
depression. Clinical depression is the more severe form
of depression, also known as major depression or major depressive
disorder. While researching her own illness, she was
exposed to two stark realities – Mental illness was a taboo topic in India
like elsewhere in the world and the lack of information and
stigma associated with mental illness made it difficult for those
who are suffering to seek the help they need. She sought
to change this. As a result of her empathy and her willingness
to give back to the society, she founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF) in June 2015 which addresses one of the very
important issues existing in the Indian society, even in the 21st century that is the stigma associated with mental health. 2014, post the experience (ahh..) and post coming out with my experience with depression,
I also felt like I didn’t wanna stop there. I felt like I wanted
to give back (ahh..) and I wanted to help people and so for
me coming out and speaking out (ahh..) openly was to sort of help people
understand what depression is because you don’t really see very
obvious physical signs or symptoms unlike (ahh..) certain other
illnesses and I felt like by coming out and sharing my experience
with the world, if I could help even one life I felt like the
purpose would be served. Despite her struggles, Deepika did
not let her career be affected and went on to win a film
fare award for best actress in a leading role for her movie PIKU
in 2015. Joined the list of ten highest paid actresses in
the world in 2016 and also made it to the
TIME 100 most influential people in the world in 2018 along with numerous other awards and accolades. It is not easy to suffer from any kind of mental illness and still
manage to be successful, but Deepika chose to not be ashamed
and opened up to the public about her condition with the hope
to encourage people to seek appropriate help without the fear
of being judged. She chose not to give up. Can you do it too? Think
about it. Because #ItMatters.
