Ecology and Environment

Wetlands and Lakes are ecosystems whose formation, processes and characteristics are determined by water. These ecosystems are diverse both in terms of physic-chemical, biological and socio-economic characteristics as well as geographical distribution. Floodplain, marshes, deltas, swamps, peat lands, bogs, reservoirs, rivers and lakes are all types of wetlands.

The state of Manipur has wide floral and faunal diversity, high percentage of endemism as well as hosts of species which are presently at various degrees of threat. Thus forĀ  the protection , conservation and regeneration of the flora and fauna of the state wetland as well as the water bodies of the state being depleted due to developmental programmes and encroachment for settlement, the necessity of conservation of the wetland and waterbody is seriously felt.
